What is the diffence between MySQL and MSDE?

I have Visual Studio 6.0, running on ME (Millinium Edition).
I want to develop VB6 applications on my desktop which can be migrated to SQL Server. Should I use MySQL or MSDE?

How can I determine if MySQL or MSDE are installed on my machine?

To check if MySQL is installed, just open the Control Panel, open Add/Remove Programs, and check if "MySQL servers and clients" is in the list of programs. (At least, that's how it's usually done in Windows NT and 98; ME could be slightly different).

I'm afraid I know nothing about MSDE.

MSDE is to all intents and purposes Microsoft SQL Server which is a derivative of Sybase. MySQL is a newer kid on the block. It doesn't have some major features of MSDE.

I recommend you use MSDE.

You want to develop on relatively similar systems to the production evironment, or you'll end up having problems.

Also has pointed out, there is a richer feature set in MSSQL than on MySQL
