MySQL source code file unzip problem

I am trying to install mysql 3.23.51 on sun sparc platform running solaris 8. I have downloaded the source code and unziped the file but when I do the tar -xvf i get one of two errors :
tar: directory checksum error (or)

tar: directory checksum error
Broken Pipe

I have tried downloading the souce code from different sites and always have the same problem. I am also unable to use the package because the there is no more space in the directory it wants to install to.
