Mysql Sort by date

Does the date have to go in the database in a certain format to sort by date? This is my SQL statement.

SELECT * FROM calendar ORDER BY start date

MySQL assumes that dates handed to it for insertion on a column are of the general format YYYY-MM-DD. If you give it dates formatted in other ways, MySQL may mis-interpret the date and store what you don't expect.
