mysql randomly idles for some seconds

Hi,

This occurred at two evenings now for about 2 hours: mysql-4.1.11 idles for some seconds and the processlist shows more and more connects (command:connect/status:login). When threads_conntected reaches about 400-1000 mysql starts working and makes some querys for some seconds. Then it starts collecting connecting-threads again and so on ..

I hope you have an idea what is going on here.
