You have to reconfigure PHP with the --with-mysql=/path/to/mysql option. If you installed the RPMs for MySQL, the path would be /usr.
If you installed the PHP RPM, there is a php-mysql RPM available. //Daniel

Is the reconfiguration done in the php.ini file???

cheers
