mySQL 4.1 c-api prepared statements dont link

I need to use the c-api for prepared statements for mysql 4.1alpha I'm getting nowhere as there are many unresolved symbols and the suggestions that come from mySQL AB are little more than trivial.

Can anyone confirm that they can link a client program on a windows 2000 or XP platform with any of the prepared statements described in the mysql 4.1 doc using the 4.1alpha release?
