I put together a system with a PIII 866, Asus
CUV4x-E motherboard, Maxtor 30GB HD, 128MB PC133 ram.
When I powered it up everything seemed to
be working fine: boot up, POST, memory count,
but when I tried installing WinME or any
other version of the windows, the whole system
would freeze up displaying the following
message: "Application Error. Caused a general
protection fault in module SYSTEM.DRV at
0001:0280" ,just before I get the screen
with all the installation options. I checked
all the frequency multipliers and all the
jumpers, partitioned and formated the HD
over and over again, but it didn't help.

Please HELP!!!!!

Assuming this is all new hardware, I'd suspect the RAM of having problems, lose cables, wrong cables/incorrectly installed cables, bios problem, hard drive problem, corrupt install media, pretty much in that order.

try slowing your computer some . disable the L2 cache during the install.

if you're trying to install from CD, try copying the contents onto the hard drive first before running the OS setup...
