My Windows backup utility doesn't see the CD-R/RW device.

I have a SONY CD-R/RW model: CRX220A1 which is working fine for playing and writing CD's. However when I attempt to use the backup untility with Windows XP, the only device available to backup to is the floppy drive. Is there a configuration change to be made enabling Windows to see the CD-R/RW device as a backup device? If so, could some provide me with instructions to accomplish this?

Thank you for any assistance you can provide!

Hi, the backup utility included with XP doesn't support backing up directly to any type of CD recorder, and I haven't found any setting to change it. "Ntbackup.exe" was originally included with Windows2000 and probably pre-dates the CD-RW hardware (or at least it was before these devices became so commonly available!) My suggestion: backup to a file (or files) and then copy that file to your CD-R/RW. Unfortunately, that means you manually need to keep track of file sizes and free space, keep each "set" under 650MB just to be safe. Good luck.

If your program got a "direct cd"-option, so you can handle your cdrw from within Windows Explorer with drag-and-drop, you can easily backup on the cd with Ntbackup.
Every newer program should have an option like that, I use "Roxio Easy CD Creator 5" that shipped with the writer (unpaid publicity...).

Thank you for your responses. I do appreciate receiving them. I was just hoping to be able to take advantage of the scheduling utility for backing up my data.

Thanks everyone!

Nate

I was just reading a software reseller newsletter.
They mention a product called BackUp My PC by Stomp.
Approx $80 cost-and it apparently includes an unattended backup feature.

I know nothing about this software, I just thought of your post when I read the article.

NTI backup CD NOW is a great util for scheduling backups. I will also compress and span disks. Not sure how much it is.
Hope this helps
