I ran ran Dstshift.nlm like Novell said to.
But it tells me I don't need the update.
Also I used the set time command to set the correct time on the server and when I did, and type in the command time at the console the time at the server is correct. But all my flamin win98,me and xp clients! keep getting put 5 hours hours behind when they are rebooted. I also patched all workstations with appropriate MS updates and patches, they all still won't freakin take the correct time from the server! What in the world can I do to fix this other than upgrade to Novell 6? I have two sites with Novell six and those particular sites have no time problems.

Help!

Thanks for your Help,
Bill

Is the time zone on your server correct? Also are the time zones set correctly on your workstations?

Yes All the workstations are set to Eastern standard US & Canada. I also used an EST command with th set command on the Novell server. If there is no solution I will have to wait till I can upgrade to Novell 6. Damn DST time change!

Why stop at Netware 6.0? Go all the way to OES and make it worth the effort. Also, the DST update works on all versions of NetWare, so it shouldn't matter. I'm guessing your Time Zone strings are incorrect, which is why it didn't work. EST is not correct. It should be something like, EST5EDT..

The EST signifies Eastern Standard Time
the 5 indicates the offset from wherever the Timezones start. I'm not sure if 5 is right or not.
The EDT signifies Eastern Daylight Time. Without that, the server may assume you don't celebate :) DST.

I have nine open licenses coming. I am just waiting for Novell to send them. I have typed in help "space" Time at the console but I have no idea what timezone to set it for or how. It is a Novell 5.0 server I am in Newyork Newyork time zone. It just says basically how to set time in general not time zones. All I know is when I type in time at cosole, server has correct time but clients still won't accept it and when they boot they are 5 hours off.
If anyone has any other insight please post. Novell will probably support me after I upgrade to 6. and we have one copy of 6 server already so that is what the server will be upraded to.

Thanks,
Bill

EST5EDT? what is correct syntax

"set time EST5EDT"

I doubt it will work but I'll try again.
The reason i say this is the server time is already correct.
If not this is beating a dead horse will move on to novell 6.5 eventually.

You should see the syntax in your Autoexec file. I don't know, it's like you set it once and never touch it again. But yours is wrong so you need to fix it. The fact that you say your workstations are 5 hours off.. it's got to be that time zone string.

I hardly ever reboot that server. The autoexec.ncf doesn't matter unless it is rebooted. If I set that time zone and reboot a workstation if it works I need to put it there. if not it is a waste of time. also what command can I use from the console to edit autoexec.ncf? I know if i shut the sever down I can use edit c:\autoexec.ncf from dos.But I really don't think that the time zone is the problem because before the dst rules I think it worked fine. Also i keep mentioning to you when i type time at the console it is correct. this does not make any sense.

You came here asking for help. If its such a waste of time, and it's not going to fix it anyway, then go somewhere else and stop wasting our time. We don't get paid for volunteering our support here, the least you could do is listen to the advice that has been given. It sounds like your expertise is far beyond what any person on here is capable of, despite the fact that numerous people that participate are highly trained and experienced with Novell NetWare and work with it every day.

Btw, I did not tell you to modify the autoexec. I told you to
look at the autoexec for the correct syntax. I would have just looked it up myself, but it would have been such a waste of time and I just couldn't muster up the energy.

Also there is no C:\autoexec.ncf file - consider that little tidbit a freebie from a Master CNE with 15 years of experience, operates a highly reputable consulting firm that operates internationally, and speaks at technology conferences, but obviously doesn't know anything about setting the time zone on a server.

Dude Microsoft will buy novell then netware will probly disappear anyway. edit autoexec.ncf works but what is the proper syntax now my server won't stop beeping.
Anyone who knows how i can put the right time zone in my autoexec.ncf please post. i'm in brooklyn ny. it sounds like a cardiac machine.

Newyork Newyork Eastern standard time.
Also is there a timesync stop command because after I typed in timesync to synchronize the network my server won't stop beeping.

You will find that Microsoft have modelled a lot of Active Directory (poorly) on NDS and I very much doubt that Microsoft will buy Novell so you are very misinformed on that (even if an agreement was made, there would be all sorts of issues ove rmarket dominance that would never be resolved).

If the server is beeping, what is the error message? Is it related to time synchronisation?

To clarify, there is no C:\AUTOEXEC.NCF file. There may be a C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT but this has nothing to do with NetWare. There is, however, a SYS:SYSTEM\AUTOEXEC.NCF file and you can edit this by typing EDIT AUTOEXEC.NCF at the server console.

The first few lines in the AUTOEXEC.NCF should relate to time synchronisation. The line for your server should read something like:

SET TIME ZONE = EST5EDT

There may be some daylight savings settings too, I cannot comment on them because I am UK based. You can confirm what time zone the server is currently using by typing SET TIME ZONE at the server console.

If your server still beeps, post the error that appears.

Synthetic time is being issued on partition "t=new_start group" then it beeps. posts the same message then beeps again. Help it sounds like I'm in a hospital.

post the top lines of your autoexec.ncf.

synthetic time is not a major problem as long as it is not too much of a future date - then you are into declaring an epoch

time zones afraid are a bit confusing to most of us - especially as we only have one and the other side of the pond dweller's have lots - also we didnt have to bother with any of this time change

i assume you only have one partition?
strange name

Also, is the timesync NLM still loaded? Type MODULES or M at the server console and check to see whether TIMESYNC.NLM is loaded.

Yes timesync nlm is loaded.
Thanks for set time zone command
now time updates on workstaions correct.
But annoying beeping won't stop.
yes new start is my one and only partition.
I get the synthetic time message like i posted then the server beeps every 15 minutes or so.
if synthetic time is causing the beeping how do I stop it from beeping?
