Does your 'other' computer have problems with your phone line? It's tough to know if it is your modem or your phone line that is causing the trouble.

Could call waiting be causing problems?

I don't think I have had problems with the PC but I will check it out. as it is a recent problem it coudl be either. thnanks

Sounds like the modem is dropping the connection because of the phone line quality. Internal modem? Usually the drops are attributed to some interference on the line....

Oh well thanks again Macgeneral. I will just have to put up with it. I wonder if it happens if somone tries to ring in. tho I do not have call waiting I do only have one line.I usually have my mobile on so if soemone wants me and I am online they can get me and I do not usually get a call on that just after so It will have to remain a mystery.

Cheers

Most likely it is your phone line. Call your phone company and they can do a line test. It's free. If the problem is between you and them, they'll fix it free. It could be your wireing as well. Reversed polarity on your phone jack is a possiblility, as well as interfearance from electrical devices and cordless phones. (Unplug all the other phones in your house and see if it still continues.) Also, most ISP's have a limit to how long you can remain connected on a dial-up. They will automatically dump your connection after their set time is up. I've seen ISP's that dump their modem connections every 4 hours. In that case, close your connection and reconnect before starting your download, so you know you'll have time...
Best of luck,
PT

Thanks PTmon The fault seems to have fixed itself. tho I have had to change the modem set up from the Appleinteral v90 to the apple internalV34..I am not sure if it makes things slower or not.Does the V number indicate the bpm coming down the line.
If so I will haev to get on to Apple to se wahat I can do to fix it.

With my wallstreet portable, I travel a lot, and two ISPs in the US require me to use v.34 (28.8) instead of v.90 (56k) if not they connect but do not stay connected. everywhere else v.90 works, so it is not my modem. I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

Yes, you are slowing your connection down to 33.6
It makes your modem less susceptible to noisey phone lines. Seriously, call your phone company and ask for a line test. It's free. Worst that can happen is they say there's no problem on their end.
I worked at the hell desk for an ISP for 5 years. I have seen this hundreds of times :)

Thanks PTmon.
I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that I have 2 modems and 1 ordinary phone on my line. However I will give BT a ring too. I do have to unplug a 2nd novelty phone to get a line out at all on the modem. even tho supposedly able to run 4 phones off the line.
