I have the McAfee Total protection and this is the most frustrating program that I have even used. Right now it says that my 'computer is not protected'. 'Click button to fix'. But when I click the button it says 'One of more of your problems require your response. It says to the right that I need to 'verify my subscription' for 3 items. I do that for each item, but the screen doesn't change. I still have 'computer and files, action required' and 'internet and network, action required'
I can't click on these items and 'Help' doesn't lead me to a solution either.
I have XP on a Pentium 4 with all updates on the computer and the McAfee software.

Sounds like your McAfee subscription may have expired. You should call McAfee's Customer Service department and have them check your account.

Well, I didn't see anywhere I could call anyone, only chat. I did that, and 'Babu' in India said that he thought that it was remnants of an older McAfee program that was interfering with the current one. He said reload, which is what I thought he would say. He didn't answer many of my questions, just ignored them. I ask him how to clear out the old program and he sent me a program to do that.
All the trouble I have had with this program, I certainly wouldn't advise anyone to buy it. It is working Ok now. We will see it the problem recurs.
This program really slows down my computer. It does things I tell it not to do too.

I've seen this frequently on McAfee, too. If your subscription is up to date, I've found that one or more of these things work.

1) Manually update McAfee by right-clicking on the icon, and selecting the "Update Now" option.

2) If step 1 doesn't work, reboot the computer. Give the computer time to check the website for updates. Sometimes I have to also do step one.

3) Failing step 2, go to McAfee ServicePortal and select the Virtual Technician. This will run you through a series of tests to determine the likely problem. If the technician can correct it you will be "good to go." If you have a virus that stops McAfee, it should tell you what to do. Most often it will say the some component is not working which can be caused if McAfee is trying to update when you shut down the system or by a virus/malware.

4) If all else fails, uninstall McAfee and reinstall. I often skip step 3 and go to this step since most often this is what the virtual technician tells me to do anyway.
