run
Netscape 4.77
Staroffice 5.2
couple of mp3 using mpg123
30min later.....

already using 16% of swap space.

What the f^&* is going on?
I was going to do some java, but no chance after seeing that my swap space is already being used.
If i wanted a bad memory mangement OS I would of stuck with Windoze.
pls help
do I need more ram?
thanks

if you ran:
Netscape 4.77
MSoffice XP
couple of mp3s
an a Pentuim II 333mhz it would do the same sort of thing

The swap algo does not just use up ram then move onto swap, it work on a least recently used so some stuff that was used to start the apps may be swapped out just because its not been used for a while-you can chnage the policy in /etc/system

Thanks for all you replys.
But the system is to sluggish, to work comfortably. I'v tried using Netbeans java IDE, but that takes for ever to load up. When it is up, changing between the different windows is slow. The screen takes couple of seconds to refresh.

Has this got anything to do with the use of the slow swap space?
