I have been using FP98 for years. After all these years it had become a breeze for me to create webs and modify them. Then.... I had to reformat my harddrive. I made a back-up of my webs prior to reformat. Got computer running again and re-installed FP98. But it is completly different than what I'm used to. For one, I can't open FP and then select the web I want to use. It won't let me tell it where they are located. It just keeps saying something about a rootweb??? I don't even know what that means. So I opened one of my webs on the internet and used the edit button, just like I used to do. It now gives the option to edit using FP "editor". I don't remember that. I thought it used to just say, edit using FP??? Anyway, that way doesn't work either. I can open the file but all I get is list of the different pages (folders & files). In the past, I would actually be working "the" webpage. It would be in full view and it had tabs at the bottom so I could see the html code and a tab for preview. When I made changes to the web I just hit save and it was automatically uploaded to the web. I'm so confused. I have not idea what I did different this time. Can anyone help me??

Thanks in advance for your suggestions and help.

-- This is a duplicate post to one from 10/8/03. I've had no repsonses and I am worried that it will get lost in the masses. I've change the subject in hopes that someone will have a better idea of my problem and be able to help.

Thanks again.

The biggest problem is probably that FP 98 is fairly out dated and many of us hardly remember using it :) upgrades since FP 98 have been significant - especially the latest upgrade.

Several possible changes that could be causing your problems since you reformatted are upgrades to IE - but most likely the biggest one is that you may not have reinstalled PWS/IIS. FP 98 required a PWS (Personal Web Server) to work properly, newer versions didn't require.
what operating system are you using?

I would highly recommend upgrading FP - at least to FP 2000, but the newer the better since PF has changed a lot since 98 and for the better.

Thank you Tiffany. I just may do that, espically if it makes my life easier.

Sorry, forgot to include that I'm now running Windows98 but about to upgrade to Windows 2000.
Thanks again.

If you are about to upgrade to WIN 2000 - then you don't need to worry with PWS. Win 2000 comes with IIS (Internet Information Services) which will work nicely for FP 98.

You will need to go into Add/Remove Programs after you install Win2000 and select the option for Windows Components and look in the list for IIS to install it. It doesnt install with the default win2k installation. When you install IIS, click the details button to make sure that you have FP server extensions checked to install with IIS.

I do believe, once you get over a little shock at the changes from FP 98 to any newer version, that you will LOVE it - and it will make life easier - the improvements over 98 version are really good.

Buy Office XP between August 15, 2003, and November 30, 2003, you may be eligible for a free upgrade to a Microsoft Office 2003 Edition or other Microsoft Office System program through the Microsoft Technology Guarantee Program. See the following URL for details and more information:

So, if you buy FP 2002 before Nov. 30, you should qualify for a free upgrade to FP 2003. If you are interested, a word of caution: Get FP 2002 quick, before it is pulled from store shelves and replaced with FP 2003!

Thanks. I've now installed Windows 2000 and included the IIS (with FP extensions) as you described. Guess, I'll need to go buy FP 2002 now.

Thanks again for your info and help.
