My Dot (i.e ".") files are not displaying at the top ... why? 1

Why, when I run a ls -la command, I'm seeing my dot files Innerspecred in my list? There must be a setting somewhere that is screwing me up ... help, this is simply #@%*& frustrating!!

It's as if the listing is not recognizing the leading dot and sorting on the 2nd character.
EXAMPLE:

Just an update ...

The effect I was experiencing was due to the solaris upgrade from version 8 to version 9.

Read the man page for 'ls' in Solaris version 9 for more insight.
