I have installed Active Directory on my Windows 2003 servers. I created a Netbios name, test and a domain name, test.lab
DNS servers are working and my workstations are XP Pro service pack 2. When I startup my workstations after they joined the domain. I see the logon menu shows only Netbios domain name instead of DNS domain name in the domain drop down menu. Can anyone tell me why?

Is you workstation using the same DNS server as your server ?

Thank you everyone. The only reason I found was that my DNS domain name is too long (more than 15 characters). Therefore, the logon window shows Netbios name. Everything is working in my lab.
I changed the domain name to be shorted than 15 characters and I see the DNS name now.

You'll also see netbios names in my network places. If you wish to see DNS names, you'll have to dissable using netbios over tcp/ip in the tcp/ip properties for your PC's. XP will default to using what your server does if you are using DHCP, so you'll only need to change those on static IP's.

Guess what, you'll not need a WINS server after that. Everything will use DNS.

Start, Help. You'll be surprised what's there. A+/MCP/MCSE/MCDBA
