Redirecting "My Documents" (or just Documents as it's now called) on Windows 7 seems to be a bit of an issue with no good solution. Anyone come across this and have a real solution?
Currently the GPO that applies to XP machines redirects the 'My Documents' with the following settings:
User Configuration/Policies/Windows Settings/Folder Redirection/Documents/Setting:Basic - Redirect everyone's folder to the same location
User Configuration/Policies/Windows Settings/Folder Redirection/Documents/Target folder location: Create a folder for each user under the root path
User Configuration/Policies/Windows Settings/Folder Redirection/Documents/Root Path: \\server\share\staff
eg For user Clair, this folder will be redirected to: \\server\share\staff\Clair
and that worked great on XP.
On W7 there is a known issue that's discussed at but the workarounds aren't good IMO. The problem is that it renames all user folders to 'My Documents' so \\server\share\user1 is shown as \\server\share\My Documents and \\server\share\user2 also shows as \\server\share\My Documents. The permissions on each folder is the only way to see who's folder it actually is.
1. Create a subfolder under the redirected folder in the Universal Naming Convention (UNC) path. For example, use the following UNC path: \\server\users\username\Documents
This already exists (see above example). Not sure what they mean by this "workaround"
2. Grant the user exclusive rights to the redirected folder
Not great because this stops admin users from being able to browse the folders to assist users, backup files etc
3. Do not grant the Read permission to the administrator for the Desktop.ini files on the server.
Very manual. Even if it was scheduled to run a script to do this eg once a day it's very messy.
Anyone found a good workaround for this issue?
