I have a celeron 400 mhz win 98 mcafee virus scan running. When I clck on my computer it is showing to cdrom drives while I only have one installed. When I open up IE and try and type in an address or try and use the drop down menu for previous addresses ie stops responding. any ideas your help is much appreciated!

Check your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files to see if you have more than one line in each file relating to the CD-ROM driver. If yes, try REMing out the duplicated lines.

Good luck!

i checked and there is a line in CONFIG.SYS that is already rem and there is only 1 line in AUTOEXEC.BAT so they look good. any other ideas??

Not sure how your hardware is configured, but let's assume you have your hard disk on the first controller and the CD-ROM on the second. Check the jumpering on the CD-ROM and set it to MASTER. Does this make any difference?

If not, then try disconnecting the CD-ROM drive and booting up the PC. The system will "unfind" the CD-ROM(s). Now close down, switch off, and reconnect the CD-ROM. Turn on PC and see if that has made any difference.
