Hi all....

Quite a simple but nonetheless irritating problem... in my infinite wisdom i have accidentally deleted the my computer icon (i didn't even know this was possible) whilst trying to remove some other junk from my desktop.

I am trying to retrieve it and not use a shortcut that i have on the quick launch bar.

I know this sounds pedantic, but i have now got a bee in my bonnet because i cannot restore it.

I have tried switching Start Menu types and this does not restore it? any other ideas?

Kindest Regards

Just a quick thought..

If you still have the icon for My Computer in your start menu, you should be able to right-click on it and tick the "Show on Desktop" menu item.

Cheers Tazuk,

It did lead to the solution, but wasn't quite it. I use the classic start menu, as i am not a fan of all this green and blue and silver stuff. When i switched to the XP style start menu, i could indeed reinstate the My Computer Icon using the method you described. But when i switched back to the nice start menu (IMO) it dissapeared again.

So, i done what i done before and deleted the My Computer icon on the desktop when using the XP start menu, bu this time i read the warning... seems there are options in the display panel where you can select it on and off... who knew!!!

Thanks for the insight anyway, it lead to me solving the prob and gaining an ounce of self respect back... plus i can now stop swearing loudly at the computer when i accidentally click 'My Network Places' when trying to access my drives.

Np - glad to hear you sorted it out (I'd forgotten about those Display Options as well - I tend to build systems, rush through setting the options and then forget where they are lol).

You can right click on the desktop, select properties and then desktop. Select customize desktop and make sure my computer is checked under general.
