My Computer doesn't recognize Com port 2

My computer does not recognize my Com 2 port. What is this port typically used for and how do you recapture it, or get the computer to see it.

1. Clink MyComputer->ControlPanel=> Add new Hardware
Follow the guidance and try to identify the new hardware using that wizard.
2. If no success... Restart Computer.. get into BIOS and ensure that COM2 is enabled. If not enable that and then Step1.
3. If no success.. Check IRQ using system properties, and make sure that your Modem is not using the COM2. Then probably, you can set COM2 as COM4

While you turn on COM2, you could make the modem into the wrong side, since often modem is set for COM2.
