my cd burner is seen in windows but always says busy, in win 98
My problem started in xp pro, so i changed to 98 and its still not there. My dvd drive was the same way but after installing 98 it came back to life
Writing software often writes some aspi files and then writers don't work until the aspi layer is corrected.

thanks for the help but the adaptac link refers to scsi my drive is ide (ide cd r/rw 4x4x24),
but now my drive doesnt lock up any more it just wont read any data from any disk.
think you can help me with that
4x4x24 ? I had a HP 4x4x24 that started doing the same thing. It had just worn out and was bad. You can get a 52x32x52 for about $30 US. Sounds like you need a new one. You might try cleaning that one first and see it that fixes it.
If the problem exists in both 98 and XP (after doing a clean installation), then I doubt it's a software issue. XP for example doesn't rely as heavily on the ASPI layer as say Win98.
Troubleshoot it as you would any other hardware issue - try the drive on its own IDE channel doing another clean install if necessary. Replace the IDE cable, clean the drive, etc.

ASPI is used by IDE devices, and this does stop many writers from working !
