Hi I need some much need help and advice on how to get my mail working on a domain I recently set-up.

I set-up the domain last week, and pointed it to a server I have running multiple sites. I get the following info using Dig.

85710 IN CNAME clanmarcroft.com.
clanmarcroft.com. 85710 IN A 66.93.186.139

I have so far tried unsucessfully to get mail delivered to the server at 66.93.186.139. (This server currently accepts mail for another domain I have running). So far I have tried:

No MX record
MX record of MX record of clanmarcroft.com

But none of these seem to work as they all get bounced. With the following error info:
66.93.186.139 does not like recipient.
Remote host said: 550 5.7.1 <geirean@clanmarcroft.com>

Is there someone who could help, and point me in the correct direction. As I think I am about to go round in circles.

Firstly, you don't have an MX record currently for that domain.

Secondly, the server isn't configured to accept mail for that domain and thus thinks that it's a relay attempt.

Connected to dsl093-186-139.chi2.dsl.speakeasy.net (66.93.186.139).

Thanks for the help Chris.

I am expecting that if I can sort out the server to accept mail then I won't need to add a mx setting, as the mail server is not separate from everything else.

If I still have problems I will update the thread.

Cheers, G.

You will still need an MX record if you expect to receive mail for clanmarcroft.com.

Hello there
I have created my own domain through my own PC
I am using WinXP and I have worked out you can set up your own domain name through:
C:\<windows folder>\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
Where you have within the file 127.0.0.1 localhost
I added the same IP but made a domain name after it and it worked.

All I need to do is to work out how to set up all my records such as, A(host record),mx (mail exchange) ans CNAME records somewhere in my root directory in XP
If this can be done please let me know
E-Mail: lodin30672@hotmail.com

If there is a program not trialed for setting up DNS records, which in the past I started using SImple DNS Plus, and trialed runned out, if, possible someone knows a way to get rid of the trial it would help rather than manually configuring records.

Thank You
WyteWolf

In order to check you have set up your MX record use NSlookup. See article - 203204 in the microsoft knowledge base.

Setup your mx record, always use the IP address. Do not use a CNAME record this can lead to routing issues.

Thirdly as you can see from the other post, your server is open for telneting without athentication you may want to close that

Just a note; an MX record should always point to a host or FQDN which will then have an A record to map the IP address.

As for your hosts file, this is quite different from DNS. You need a DNS server.

Chris.
