Mute button light will not go out

here's a puzzler for you - in 15 years I have never heard of this happening. We have a user at a remote site that swears when he presses the mute button on his 6048 phone that it works, but will not go out when pressed again.

we have tried replacing the phone set, but it does the same thing. recently activated speakerphone on this line but don't see how that could have anything to do with it.

we've also tried busy/release, everything short of removing the station altogether and rebuilding it.

any ideas?
 

Make sure the phone type is right. Is the phone a 6408D+ and programmed in the PBX as just a 6408D?
