Must I group to move several objects at once? Illustrator wo

When I select multiple objects with a window select and try to alt+drag for a copy it doesn't work properly it doesn't copy anything or leave anything. Inorder to work I have to group everything to alt+copy. Is this something I have turned on in V10. I always have used this in prior versions of ai. I am puzzled to say the least. Also, when I have grouped certain objects together it has rearranged them in the wrong order hiding some of the objects that were previously exposed...this should be another thread most likely...anyone else experiencing these situations in V10? not CS.
