When playing music on hold from an external device such as a mp3 player, for best quility, does the music file playing need to follow the rules of the holdmusic.wav file? Meaning PCM, 8kHz 16-bit, mono?

You can use what ever file type you like. I would suggest using a mono jack on the back of the IPO.

Think twice, speak once~~!!~~

So then are you saying the IP Office really wants a mono recording? Or does it convert it. So if you connect an I Pod to it and play Pandora radio (Stereo), does it step it down to mono? There is a customer who really wants the MOH to have the best quality possible.

It's a stereo socket in the system, so best just use a standard lead. It does all the conversion for you, basically anything you can listen to with headphones will work :)
