I am having to configure a network that looks like this with a whole bunch of branches:

1 __ 3
>|__|<
2 4

Should I make the subinterface multipoint or point-to-point. What would the difference be.

Thanks

I would go with Point-to-Point sub interfaces. To me it makes trouble shooting easier. You can add describtions on each sub interface along with the assigned DLCI's. Jeter@LasVegas.com

When u use Point-to-point it is easy to troubleshoot and also easier for routing protocols (no split-horizon rulez).
Other side of it is je must make 4 subnets

Problem is when 1 link fails between router 1 and 2 in your Ring senario.
The traffic will be routed over the link between 2 & 3 then 3 & 4 and then 4 & 1 (3 hops away)
If your site is growing in the future it will be worse.

Soo when looking at an easy future

Think of a hub and spoke methode and Point to multi point and EIGRP as routing protocol.
Use no ip split-horizon eigrp on multipoint interface from the hub router

All the spokes use point to point ínterfaces.
For a backup method use ISDN with Dialer Watch or Floating static routes.

Good luck with it.
