All of a sudden I am getting from 5-25 icons of five different programs on the right side of my screen. I ran Adware, clean, I ran NAV, it too was clean but if I delete a particular icon like Internet Explorer and the first number is three and the last one 21 and reboot my system, I now have # 22. I disable everything in MSCONFIG inclusing ini files and I still get these icons. I decided to uninstall one program, rebooted and something now added six new programs or duplicates of original programs icons and it is cluttering up my desktop. Deleting doesn't work.

Can anyone help me figure out where my problem might be ?

Thanks

Arthur

Try these.

Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersi
on\Explorer\User Shell Folders

Change CommonDesktop from:
%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Desktop

To:

CommonDesktop
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop

(Or the appropriate Drive Letter of Windows).

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Explorer.

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows itself by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.
