We have a Novell network and my XP users who access files on a shared server directory are seeing temp files created every time they click "save" while working on a file. Closing Excel and then getting back in does not delete these files. They have not experienced crashes. I can't find any information on this problem. Any help is appreciated.

Found the answer for this. We recently upgraded to Norton AV 8.0 and this problem was caused by realtime protection running simultaneously on the server and on clients. This is a known problem w/Norton, according to Symantec. We temporarily disabled AV on the server and the problem went away.

Glad you found it, ckester.

Are you guys having Norton run "on open of Office files"? There's no need for that you know. The files are all scanned as they're brought onto your PC anyway, right? There's a setting in Norton under Miscellaneous (I believe) where you can turn that off.
