I have an Access database on our network at work. In one directory, any number of users (within a defined Group) can simultaneously open the database and read/write data.

However, in another directory, though each user (same Group) can open the database and read/write data, no-one else can open the database at the same time.

I'm presuming therefore that it is not the database security/permissions, but the directory/file permissions on the network.

Any advice appreciated.

Ah, the user needs read/write/delete priv for the directory. If not, the first person in will cause the database to be placed in read only exclusive mode.

What he said above; specifically you need the create/delete privileges which your IT guy probably didn't bother to set, or erroneously assumed you wouldn't need as "that's the database folder".
