Hi I was wondering if you could help me.

In one of the smaller offices at work we have a internet connection plugged into a router and then 7 computers plugged into the router. The staff in the office vary computer and home directories are stored on a NAS (Networked attacthed storage). I was wondering if there is a way of setting the nas up to store passwords and user settings (all most as a server) so when the user logs on the same settings are loaded no matter what machine is used.

Thanks Simon

I dougt there is a NAS system that can offer that. It sounds like you want profiling with authentication, and your best bet for that is a server.

I don't know of any NAS system that does that. What kind does your company has (Manufacturer, make, model)?

Thanks for the post. No I'm pretty sure the NAS doesn't have a built in authentification system however I was wondering whether it is possible to create, if you like, a so called password list that windows verifies itself against. Or a database, similar to web logons. As you can see I'm a programmer and therefore don't have much experience in domain/server setup.

Thanks for any help
simon

Depending on what kind of NAS it is, I think there are various ways to do this. There is a usermapper, which populates a cache on the NAS from the domain controller which stores the users SID etc. to control what objects that user has permissions for, there are also various scripts that allow you to create a passwd/group file on the NAS with a syntax that stores windows user information.

Thanks roycrom. What sort of script would i need to use to create a password/group file syntax on the NAS. if you could show me an exmaple of this, I would be grateful.

Thanks simon
