Multiple text boxes

I have multiple text areas in my page (ActiveX DHTML edit control). When using the format toolbar, I would like to affect only the area the cursor is in or that has text highlighted. Any idea how I could do this in DHTML? Basically, what would I need to get a handle to the object that has focus or has the cursor?
