I haven't tried this yet but I wanted to get some of your comments.

Would I be able to set up a server and have it act as the mail server, dns server and proxy server ALL under the same IP address? If I am, are there any "gotchas" that some of you have come across when doing this?

I know they use different ports. So ... would I be able to get away with this if I created different aliases for each service?

For example:
Server Name: Server1
IP address: 1.2.3.4
Aliases: mail.server.com, dns.server.com, proxy.server.com

Thanks

I believe when I set up my server at home to do what you're talking about, all it took was adding a couple of CNAME host lines to my DNS zone.

Hi,

The main thing is to get your DNS (bind) server working and to edit your domain record so that the NS entries point to your box. Once that's done its all down to you - use as many canonical names as you like for the same IP Address. You'll need slightly different format records for the mail side (MX records) but its all fairly easy at a basic level once you have bind working OK.

As you say, all these services use different tcp ports and, as such, can very happily co-exist on the same box.

Its as well to make sure there will be no problems with your ISP in blocking any of the ports before attempting to run for real. For example with bind you can use dig remotely to make sure queries work to your dns server.

dig @172.16.16.1
(where 172.16.16.1 would be your real static IP address)

If you have a dynamic IP address then its a bit more tricky but not inordinately so. You have to use ddns to 'post' the active IP address for your domain as it varies from time to time. For example, via
