Multiple SCCM servers and firewalls

I have been asked to take a look at a system that has multiple SCCM servers in different sites. These are all linked together, and the system works well. One of the reasons for the system is software inventory, and this is what I am concerned about here.

We now need to change the network, to firewall off some process systems. We still need to be able to do an automated software inventory on the systems behind the firewall. Can we just modify the firewall rules so that the SCCM server on the office side of the firewall can scan the process side (seems to be a bit of a security risk), or should we install a new SCCM server on the process side (expensive, as we have many process networks).

Or is there something else that I'm missing ?
