Periodically our qmail server shows 8 - 20 qmail-queue processes, each using about 5% of available cpu cycles, which totals to 98 - 100% of available cpu cycles.

I am unable to kill the processes individually, or via killall.

I haven't seen any consistent condition that I can identify that causes this condition.

I suspect that at 98-100% utilization that you are in fact killing them off but that you're so hung up time slicing the processor that the time the kill eventually takes effect probably exceeds your waiting interest.

What does your qmailqueue script command look like?

I used the life with qmail install, and didn't create a script for qmail-queue. This machine is a mirror of our previous machine that we brought down on a move to a new physical building. That machine was up for 18 months with the same install procedure - I rechecked both installs.
