IE 8 was pre-loaded on my XP Pro (SP3) computer bought slightly more than a year ago. Apparently IE8 ran long enough for me to download Firefox. Since then I had not tried to open it until recently. However, I noticed from the beginning that Help files were not available in many programs but since I rarely used them, didn't worry about it. Recently I installed some new software on two computers. On the newer, with IE8, it apparently installed satisfactorily but would not open. (On the older, with IE6, it opened with no problem.) I then tried to open IE8 and it would not open. The same message for both IE8 and the new software - IE has encountered a problem and needs to close. I studied procedures from Microsoft for uninstalling IE8, but when I went to do so, discovered that it must have been installed before almost everything else on the computer thus I hesitated to continue. Presumably there is no earlier version on the computer. I don't care about using IE8 but would like to have help files available and be able to install the new software I bought. I also find that clicking on links in some sites or trying to send an error report to Microsoft does not work. The computer manufacturer has not been helpful in responding to queries and discontinued email support for the model some months ago. Any help as to how I can get a functioning IE6 for programse that need it would be greatly appreciated.
