Hi all, I'm new here so please bear with me, I have an illustrator file (.ai), with an object that has 9 layers to it which are colored, I want to process the image in photoshop to add some filters & effects etc, I can drag it into photoshop & can pick each 'piece' up seperately but cannot add any filter effects etc........what am I doing wrong & how do I do it right? please

When you drag it into illustrator and position it, does it still have a bounding box and a x going through the box.

You can't do anything with the image until you have released it into place, by pressing enter. It is now actively in your document and you should be able to add any effect you want.

You should be aware that the "smart object" will be rasterised, i.e., converted from vector to raster, on output, the resolution depends on the resolution you predetermine in the File>New dialog box.

The smart object can be resized to any size in photoshop but it will only output as raster, not vector.

yep, I release it, & every separate piece I can pick & move, but just cannot attribute any filter effect to any part.........just don't know what I'm doing wrong !!

having it rasterized is not a problem, as its the effects I want to add that are important, the only way I can see to do it is to drag each piece of the artwork into a seperate page & add effect then, and then drag each component from its page to a 'host' page for assembly...............seems very long winded, there must be a better way.

To reset preferences to factory settings:

While holding down the [Ctrl Alt Shift ] keys, Start > All Programs > Photoshop.

A MessageBox will ask "Delete the Adobe Photoshop Settings File" to which you answer Yes.

The Preferences file will be rebuilt.

Hi

thanks all for the help, but I'm still stuck & its maybe because I'm not explaining clearly, this is the image I am using, it has several layers (elements) to it, I can drag or copy/past into PS no problem but cannot find a way of seperating & applying filters to each indizidual part.

thanks guys

Thanks Eugene, that seems to be working nicely, still somewhat long winded but a lot better than how I was struggling before........thanks again

Well, for anyone else in the same spot of bother, the thing is that it doesn't remember the layers, so if you're copying over mulitple layers into photoshop it goes onto a single layer in Photoshop.

The trick is to bring in layer by layer.

A good way to remember is that each layer is like a piece of acetate, if you bring them in all together they are all transposed onto the one sheet.

Bring them in separately and they are all on their own single sheet of acetate.

..something like this i would layer the object properly in illustator onto separate layers, then file > export to PSD format from illustrator...

Andrew

...doing it this way does away with copy>paste scenario, and o long as you have layers turned on in the file > export > psd dialog, all your layers built in illustrator are preserved in the PSD file...

...they have to be TRUE layers though, not elements within a layer as they are not technically layers in the raster world, but in the vector world they are layers...

...however, layers nested within layers do get preserved on export to PSD, for example, if you had two layers:

'Layer 1'
'Layer 2'

...and moved 'Layer 2' into 'Layer 1', they would export fine as separate layers...

Andrew

...also, the same is true for 'grouped' objects, once 'grouped' they become 'layers' in the raster world and as such get preserved on export to PSD...
