I'm not sure what I have done, but I have done something to screw things up royally.

My current setup is RedHat 6.1 with two NICs. eth0 is for the private side (10.129.10.X) and eth1 is for the public side (12.13.X.X).

I am connected via frame-relay to the Internet. If I set my default gateway for 12.13.X.1 (Internet router) I am able to access the Internet without any problems. However, I cannot ping my router. To set the default gateway, I am using route add default gw 12.13.X.1 eth1.

When I add this route, and I type route to display the route table, it takes a significant amount of time (30+ seconds for the entire route table to display). What can be done,if anything, to speed up the display of the routes? If I remove the default gateway, the route table will display very quickly.

I have read about a ping problem with RedHat 6.1. Could that be the reason I cannot ping the router?

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

I'm not sure about the ping problem being the known RedHat problem. Do you have any trouble pinging elsewhere?

Still on the ping front, can you connect to the admin port on the router and ping your server?

The delay you get when displaying the routing tables is probably related to IP address to name translation. The route display program wants to show a name instead of an address, so off it goes to get the name associated with the IP address. I am guessing that it is firing out a DNS query out to the internet, and timing out after a while. That's the delay you are seeing.

Try adding a name for the router into your /etc/hosts to see if that speeds things up a little.

In general, I don't think you've screwed anything up. The set up you are using looks OK to me. (Unless there's something you've not told us ;^) Can you connect to remote sites OK for web, FTP, etc? If so, then I think that all you've got are some minor set up issues. Let us know if the suggestions above where any use, and how you got on.

Hope this helps.

Yes, I can connect to the admin port on the router and ping the 12.13.X.X NIC. Also, I am able to access the machine from the Internet (ftp, telnet) without any problems.

I will try adding the router name to the hosts file and see of that takes care of the delay problem.

Thanks,

Jay
