multiple music multicast from one box

Hi All,

I was wondering if anyone would be able to help me with a problem I'm having.

I need to be able to multicast on a single IP address, multiple different music streams.

I've got as far as controlling which hosts can receive each stream by separating them with VLANS and using vconfig to create multiple VLANS on the one NIC.

What I need now is some help, or more likely pointing in the direction of an application, which will allow me to select a file to stream out of the individual vlans.

So file one, streams out of eth0:1, file 2 out of eth0:2 etc

I can get the streaming working, but I can't find anything that lets you control which interface it goes out on.

Any one have any ideas how this could be achieved?

I'm pretty much clueless when it comes to stuff like this but have you tried to do a web search for "streaming media server" or "webcasting"? That may not be exaxctly what you want to do but I'm sure you would be able to glean a lot of usefull information from it.

Thanks for the reply, I have already had a look at various searches. I can get all the streaming to work on a single multicast address through a single interface, but there doesn't seem an obvious way to select which stream can go on which interface.

I don't have more direct experience to offer, but I'm just trying to think this through from a networking basics perspective....

If you've defined eth0:1, eth0:2... are you defining IPs to those addresses?

Does your streaming application support this kind of implementation? Do they have a support forum?

I'm not sure a pure linux/server forum is going to give you the help you need with a specific streaming product.

Each one will have its own IP address, assigned from the VLAN it needs to multicast to.

I don't think I explained myself that well in the first post. I don't actually have a streaming application. That is the missing bit!

I have tested a couple of open source ones, but none of them do what I require. I was hoping there was some built in Linux module/feature I hadn't found or someone might know of an application that can handle this kind of configuration.

I use Tektips for various other discussions so thought I would try here first, I think you're probably right that I may need to go to a more specialised forum for any clues.

Why do you need to multicast to a single IP address? I guess normally every stream would be on its own separate multicast address. Selecting the stream would then be a matter of selecting the correct IP...

Have you looked at VLC for streaming?

It supports a lot of different kinds of protocols (there is also a vls but I have never tried that one...)

If it needs to be 1 multicast address maybe you should look at some sort of TS (transport stream) just like satellite tv and the like. The transport stream contains several program streams...
