Multiple meeting requests in Outlook 2002

We have encountered a major difference in Calendar/appointment handling between Outlook 97 and 2002.

In Exchange 5.5/Outlook 97, meeting requests appeared immediately in the user's calendar, but they were marked as tentative until the user could respond.

Our current situation, Exchange 2000/Outlook 2002: When users are trying to schedule appointments, they can't be certain that the free/busy times on the Attendee Availability page of the meeting request are accurate. For example, if someone receives several meeting invitations but is taking a few days off, by the time that person returns to work and responds to the invitations, conflicts are likely to occur. And if five people try to schedule a meeting with the boss at the same time —but the boss is out of town— each person has no way of knowing that the other four also want to book the same time.

Working with delegates is only a partial solution; not manageable for everyone in my company.

I've also found Robert Strong's AutoAccept script, but that hasn't been updated yet for Exchange 2000.

Does anyone have another idea how to improve or work around this meeting request problem? Maybe there's optional component that we didn't install?
