Multiple internet connections , how to utilise multiple connections

Hi,

I don't know , this may be a dumb question, but here goes.

If we had two ADSL connections and plugged both into the switch, are both connections utilised?

What deals with routing? do switches auto load balance?

We currently have one LLU ADSL2+ 8mb down and .75mb up.

If we replaced it with 2 x 20mb down and 1mb up lines and just plugged both into the patch panel switch.

Will that then give us theoretical 40mb down and 2mb up bandwidth?

Or will the traffic ignore one internet connection and just use one?

We have a linksys RV082 which does allow two internet connections in a load balancing environment, but what if we bought 3 x 20mb/1mb lines? it is still cheaper than our current service.

Thanks,
1DMF.

The end result largely depends on the switch. For example, do you have the switch ports configured into separate vlans? If you do, it would be possible to have one ASDL serve one subnet and the other serve a different one. Another function would be to engage in what is called trunking. I haven't looked into the details so I can't say what it would take on the ADSL side, but theoretically you could double your bandwidth by making the two lines one logical line.

Aside from that, the behavior would probably depend on how you have the IP ranges configured. For example, is one of the ADSL lines configured as the gateway? If so, it would probably be used while the other one would be ignored.

Interesting theoretical question. This could lead to some good discussions.

multi WAN router is what you want

So we need to buy a multi port / multi wan router?

can anyone recommend a specific multi wan router?

I'm not sure we want to go down the dual bonding or trunking as you call it, you need dslam cards if i recall and that sounds expensive.

If you set up a network on different subnet masks, wouldn't that stop everyone from seing all resources or each other on the network?

Thanks,

I use several RV042s, Last week I set up a client with a SonicWall NSA 2400, a more upscale box.

on ebay a RV042 should be under $100

many other models exist.
