Multiple instances of MSDE

I get the impression that it's possible to install more than one instance of MSDE on the same server. Can someone confirm this for me? I haven't been able to find anything specific on the Microsoft site. Is there something different that has to be done during the install?

I have two separate apps that will require MSDE and no choice but to put them on the same server.

2 apps should not require 2 instances of MSDE, just two (or more) databases. Unless there is some setting at the server level (rather than the database level) that needs to be different.

Are you using the 7 or 2000 version of MSDE?

One app is currently running under 2000, the other is switching to MSDE 2000 from SQL anywhere.

Does using the same instance with two database potentially mean I could have a problem with the number of concurrent users? One app is a financial management product that has 2 to 4 concurrent users. The other is a time-tracking app that could have anywhere from 1 to 20 users on at the same time (though I'd say 5 to 8 concurrent is more likely).

Doesn't MSDE have a limit of 10 concurrent users?

I don't think so, but I am not an expert in the way MSDE limits users. My understanding is that it will only run 5 concurrent processes (jobs) at a time but the others are just queued up, not disabled. So what you see is a performance hit. There have been a couple of related threads on this in the past, you might want to do some searching.
