We have several NT LAN servers that are old and need to be decommissioned, with the data moving to an existing SAN. We want to move the data to the SAN, using a single, high-speed Linux/Samba front-end server to service requests for the original servers. The users would be able to keep all of their share names the same, so access would be transparent to them. In other words, can Samba handle requests to multiple hostnames (\\hostname\sharename) in the same fashion that a NAS solution can, without resorting to multiple Linux/Samba servers? If this were the case, users would have the impression that the old servers were still in place, even though they'd been decommissioned.
If this is possible, can you see any serious (or minor) flaws in this strategy?
