Multiple GIMP programs opening everytime i open a pic

i was wondering how to prevent multiples of the same GIMP program opening everytime i open a new pic. it is weird. i used to be that i would get a warning the few times i would accidentally open GIMP when it was already opened, but now it is anytime i open a new pic. i just don't have the time or patients really to wait for The GIMP to load everytime i want to work on a new picture. it is becoming very frustrating. i would have sworn by this software a month ago but it has gone downhill for me fast. recently i could no longer see the path in which i was stroking with the bezier path tool until i actually selected the path. usually that was never quality. it even started with the elipse and rect selects as well. i tried uninstalling it and installing it about 1000 times before i had to give up and get A WHOLE NEW CPU to put it on. it seemed to have stored a hidden preference on my hard drive that told it not to show the stroking path. works now on this CPU but how long before it doesn't. i would hate to have to go to another kind of software because the GIMP is really easy to work with.

That doesn't happen to me (GIMP 2.2, Windows). If I use Windows Explorer to open a picture for editing, it will use an existing instance of GIMP, or start a new one if there is none.

I don't have that problem either (GIMP 2.2, WinXP Pro SP2).

it is happening to me. now if i open it in GIMP, it will use the existing open program but i can double click pictures and open it many times. not sure how many but i have done up to 10 at once just to see. kinda frustrating. i am running windows XP
