I've got an Outlook (pop3) user who is receiving numerous copies of the same email. The Email account is set to not leave copies on the Exchange Server.
Go into the Internet E-mail settings and set it up to leave copies of e-mails on the server for 1 day only:
Tools-->E-mail accounts-->View/Change Existing E-mail accounts
Select the pop account you are having trouble with and click Change-->More Settings-->Advanced tab
If you have the "Leave a copy of messages on server" box checked, you can either remove it. However, if you tend to check your account from the web often, you can check the box that says "Remove from server after __ days", then lower the number of days on that. Mine is set to 7 and I haven't had any problems
Number Two:
If the above doesn't work, you can try repairing Outlook from the help menu. Just make sure that you have the Office disk handy.
Number Three:
Check the e-mail server and see if anybody sent you an unusually large e-mail. Delete it. Those tend to hang up at times. It happened once to me at work when somebody sent an e-mail with a large attachment to everybody in the company. It pretty much put a halt to e-mail altogether.
Number Four:
If all else fails, close Outlook. Locate the file pop3uidl.dbx and rename it. If you have a ton of messages on the e-mail server, I suggest you go in there and delete the ones you have already downloaded. Open up Outlook again. This should re-create the dbx file for you. this has fixed the problem for me before.
