I unzipped a file to my desktop; this produced about 6 folders. When I attempted to delete these, they were copied onto the desktop. Subsequent deletions resulted in more copies. Thus every time I try to delete them I end up with more and more copies.
Any ideas on how to get rid of these self-perpetuating folders?

You could select all the files (hold control and then select each file). Then release control, press and hold the shift key and press delete. This should delete all the files from the drive without sending them to the Recycle Bin.
