Multiple columns with YTD and Last YTD

I am trying to create a report that will use dates as the colum heading and sort each column by YTD compared to Last Year to Date.

In example:

Item YTD Last Year Variance
XXXXX 10 12 (2)

and so on. The year to date is easy enough but I can't the prior year to work out.
