I realize part of my question has been answered in but I need some further clarification.

Basically this is what I want to do.

Currently I'm running a linux (fc2) box with apache 1.3, mysql 4 and php 4.

I want to install a second instance of apache (preferably version 2) so I can run mysql 5 and php5.

Is this kind of setup possible?

In other words, you can't use the same IP address and port combination for both instances of Apache. If you use different port numbers, you should be ok.
