I have a general mailbox that we've created with several aliases. I prefer to have it this way so we eliminate the need to manage multiple mailboxes. However, since everything comes in this mailbox, is there a way to differentiate to which alias the email was intended on the fly? Meaning how can i differentiate if someone sends to eng.info@blah.com or eng.sale@blah.com just by looking at the email list. I could create a rule to forward to a folder but I think this only pertains to a client and cannot be setup on server. I don't have a client dedicated to this mailbox.

Thanks in advance.

Rules can be used to achieve this. The rule you want is

"Apply this rule after the message arrives
with specific words in the message header"

and click on the specific words link and enter the alias you want the rule to fire for.

You can use a rule to move the mail to different folders, and so long as the folders are within the mailbox on the server (ie not in any PST file) then the rule will remain server-side.

The server tries to make every rule you set a server rule. Rules only become client-only when the actions cannot be completed unless the client is logged in to the mailbox.

Thanks zbnet for your info but this does not work. I do have folders created within the mailbox. Upon completing the rule, I get a message "This rule is a client-only rule, and will process only when Outlook is running". As mentioned I don't have dedicated client.

Thanks for your help.

Well all I can say is it works for me. What client are you using? Mine is Outlook 2003, and the rule definitely stays server-side.

Are you sure you made the rule exactly as I instructed?

Zbnet,

Thanks for your help. It does work. I connected to that mailbox thorough my own. That didn't work. But if connected directly to the mailbox, as you said, the rules will fire at the server side.

Thanks again.

Glad to hear you managed to get it working. Thanks for posting the update.

Right-click on the headings bar (From, Subject, Date...) and select "Field Chooser". Drag the "TO:" field over to the headings bar. Then the mailbox columns include the "TO" field so you can easily differentiate.
