I re-installed Win XP Pro on an ABS Pent 4 system which had an P4 2.4 with 512 MB Ram on an AOpen AX4B-533 MBd. It was using Realtek AC97 driver for sound on the MBd thru an Intel chip 82810DB/DBL AC 97 (ICH4/ICH4-L) to an AOpen CD-Rom which went bad.
The M-Bd AX4B-533 is Rev. 1.11, Release Version Mar 13, 2003 with a Phoenix/Award Bios Vers 6.00.
After installing a Lite-ON DVD-CD Drive I used it to install the XP Pro and then noticed the (Yellow ?) by Multimedia Audio Controller in Device Manager. I was updating the USB drivers but unable to resolve the Multimedia Audio Controller problem. An Update Driver was not successful even using Windows/internet.
I have not had much success in resolving, can anyone HELP other than some of those "for-pay" driver scans.

You may need to download the UAA driver from MS or fully update the install first, before the sound drivers catch...

Did the motherboard come with a CD that has chipset drivers and other drivers on it?

Double click that item in the device manager, under the TAB details, there is a drop down menu, check the HARDWARE ID and please list it here...

e.g. VEN_1034&DEV_0756

to BadBigBen: What are you referring to the in your first message about the UAA Drivers from MS This was a clean install &then SP2 & then SP3?

To linney: I recently came up with a Disk that came with the Motherboard (there were several systems) but they all came with Win 2000 and was upgraded to SP 2 at some later date - then I reformatted and re-installed (as above)due to many problems. Then my Multimedia Audio Controller problem occurred. Note: I had to replace the original CD-Rom which had failed, this prior to the re-install. It is a Lite-On DVD/CD I have not tried because of the change in hardware.

To BadBig Ben's last, 16Jan,it reads as follows:
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_24C&SUBSYS_01C5AOAO&REV_02\3&13C0800B0C5&0&FD

What is the DEV nr. (yours is missing a digit)... once I get that, I can point you towards the correct driver for that AC97 codec...

about the UAA, Universal Audio Architecture, is a driver from MS, which I believe is included in SP3... goto Universal Audio Architecture (UAA) High Definition Audio class driver version 1.0a available for Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, and Windows 2000 to read more about it...

To BadBigBen: Oops the number is correct except that in the above I had an extra couple toward the end. I again checked thru Device Manager double clicking on the Multimedia Contoller and hit the Tab "Details" the result is
PCI\VEN_8086&Dev_24C&SubSys_01CAOAO&Rev_02\3&13COBOC5&O&FD

The earlier one I gave you was wrong in that I had a couple extra digits in the last sequence starting "\3&13C~~~; the first part was correct up until that sequence.

This is the number that (I believe) is a bit strange "Dev_24C" it points to Intel but not to any listed Device. I would expect a 4 digit code after DEV_ and before &?

You hit the nail on the head there Linney... I guess I was not clear enough in my question there...

it does seem strange that the HardwareID would only spit out a 3 digit code in the DEV_ section... and if that is all it shows, then I would conjecture to say that there is a hardware problem...

to CeeDee - the two items I was looking for are the VEN and DEV numbers, the SubSys section contains information as to who placed it where (kinda) e.g.
Code:
SUBSYS_42991013 = ICH4 CS4299 ref card
SUBSYS_0200107B = Samsung_Arcade
SUBSYS_C005144D = Samsung_Aquila
SUBSYS_C008144D = Samsung_Draco
SUBSYS_2002165E = Hyunju_Tiger ADC75

where as the VEN and DEV #'s indicate the manufacture and what device it is, e.g. in your case VEN = Intel and DEV = ICH4 (but what device cannot be determined due to a piece of info missing)... the driver looks at those numbers and cannot match it correctly and thus will not install...

To Linney & BadBigBen
As I indicated in a reply on 16 Jan, I came across a disc that came with the system, and the AOpen Bonus Pack disc had drivers in it. In an attempt to find the drivers, especially after the confusion apparent with the hardware ID, I tried to install as finding new hardware selecting HAVE Disc option and letting the system do the work. It installed but stopped saying "install the Avance AC97 disc" which I did not have. After searching on the disc further, it did install the Avance AC97 Driver (ALC650 AC97) and although it lists the driver date as 07/--/01, it seems to work.
In Device Manager, the Multimedia Audio Controller is no longer listed nor with the (yellow ?) rather DVD/CD is listed and the Sound card is listed. It will play CD's through the speakers. Being a firm believer in if it works DON'T fix it, I have resisted trying to Update the Driver.
Your thoughts? I appreciate your replies and assistance.

I think Ben's signature is rather apt in this instance.

Until the next time, all the best.
