Hi Everyone,

I've got a badly behaving LAN. Please help as i think i've got things confused.

I've got about 10 2960 access switches connected with about 3 3560's as distribution switches. My 3560-G is the only one set to use IP routing (with OSPF- this works ok on all the other routers etc and shows a full routing table so is not the problem). I have SVI's for all the vlans on this switch and the VLAN specific IP address is the default gateway as set via DHCP for all the clients.

Do i need/want the other 3560's set with IP routing as well? is this necessary? will it confuse things? do i need to put SVI's on the other 3650's? if so what IP address? is this now the default gateway?

I have several devices that i cannot ping from my workstation, but they can be pinged from elsewhere in the LAN, (some from the same Vlan), and i think ARP might not be resolving properly as one of the 3650 switches shows very few MAC addresses.

Any ideas of what to do to check this?

Hi,

If you having L2 ( lan ) issues, I.E Local network devices on different switches in the same Vlan cannot talk to each other, Id start there, rather than looking at Layer 3. Do a thorough check to make sure all of the Trunks / VLANS and switchports are configured correctly. Dont let anything auto learn such as etherchannel etc. Once you have your L2 stuff working the rest should be ok.

Lee.
