Hi all,

A vendor has requested for multicasting to be enabled to and from 2 pre-defined IP addresses. How is it enabled on the router and what is the impact of turning multicasting on globally via "ip multicast-routing" without defining any other parameters. If the IPs can be specified, for example, IP 234.0.0.1 for the sending multicast address and IP 234.0.0.2 for the receiving.. how do i do this?
Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks in advance

You cannot source a multicast stream from a multicast address..

Basic Process to enable:

-enable multicast globally
-under the interfaces in end-to-end path enable pim sparse-mode
-setup a static RP (rondevous point) that is common among the network.. You could also setup auto-rp for dynamic assignment.

Hi Buckweet,

Thank you for the reply and for the clarification.
Would you happen to have an example configuration?
When you mention "under the interfaces in end-to-end path enable pim sparse-mode", are these router interfaces at each end? What if the multicasting only needs to happen internally within the LAN? How would I go about configuring that? Please excuse my ignorance.
